Fatboy Slim, Felix da Housecat and Carola Turn a Live Mashup Into ‘Funk Drunk’

Funk Drunk, the new single from Fatboy Slim, Felix da Housecat and Carola, is out now on Fatboy Slim’s own Southern Fried Records, and it did not start in a studio. It started in front of a crowd. During his recent DJ sets, Norman Cook had been dropping Carola’s 2024 single ‘ABC’ over Felix da Housecat’s ‘Funky Dunk’, and the reaction on the floor was loud enough to turn an off the cuff edit into a proper record.

The finished track, which features vocalist 7KY, lands as a punchy, funk forward house cut that connects three very different chapters of dance music history: Chicago house, Brighton big beat and the new wave of Brazilian house talent.

How Funk Drunk Went From DJ Booth Test to Official Single

The title itself points back to the source material, a nod to Felix da Housecat’s ‘Funky Dunk’. What began as a simple blend still took real work to finish. “What seemed like a simple idea actually took a lot of work,” Carola said in a press release shared with EDM.com. “We went through at least five different versions before reaching the final result.”

That patience shows in the record. The track keeps the loose, sample heavy energy of a live mashup while tightening everything into a club ready arrangement built on electro textures and modern underground house production. It follows a familiar pattern in dance music right now, where crowd tested edits become official releases, much like the road that Skrillex and Solomun took with ‘Rumpta’ earlier this month.

Three Names, Three Eras of Dance Music

Few collaborations cover this much historical ground in a single credit line. Felix da Housecat came up inside the Chicago scene that invented the genre, the same lineage that produced classics like Crystal Waters’ ‘Gypsy Woman’. Fatboy Slim carried dance music to festival main stages in the late nineties as the face of Brighton’s big beat movement. Carola represents the current generation: the Brazilian producer was named one of EDM.com’s best music producers of 2022 and has been climbing steadily since.

The link between Carola and the Fatboy Slim camp is not new either. She appeared on a remix of his 2001 classic ‘Ya Mama’ last year, and 7KY, the vocalist featured here, is the same voice heard on her single ‘ABC’. “I grew up listening to artists who helped build electronic music into what it is today,” Carola said, framing the record as both a tribute to house history and a signal of where it goes next.

Release Details and What Comes Next

Funk Drunk is available now on all streaming platforms through Southern Fried Records. A physical edition is on the way too: a 12 inch black vinyl pressing, catalog number ECB562, is listed for release on July 24, 2026, with retailers such as Rough Trade already taking preorders. Expect the track to surface heavily in festival sets this summer, given that it was effectively road tested in front of crowds before it was ever finished.
