A Daft Punk comic book is on the way, and it carries the duo’s official blessing. Humanoids used New York Comic Con this week to unveil an authorized, 272 page special issue of Métal Hurlant, the French science fiction anthology, built entirely around the robots. English preorders opened on October 8, a French edition reaches shops on October 14, and the American release ships in early 2027.

What the Daft Punk comic book contains

The special issue gathers work from more than 30 comics creators. According to Humanoids and the trade press covering the launch, each short story takes a moment from the duo’s history, either literally or as a metaphor, and spins it into speculative fiction rather than a straight biography. Essays on Daft Punk lore, the technology behind their sound and their contemporaries sit alongside the comics.

Named contributors include:

  • Laura Pérez, Malachi Ward, Jonathan Djob Nkondo, Zep, Édouard Cour, Matthew Sheean, Elie Huault and Florian Breuil
  • Two archival stories by Mœbius and Philippe Druillet, the artists who defined the magazine in the 1970s
  • A standard cover by Anuj Shrestha
  • An exclusive cover by Cédric Hervet and Warren Fu

The exact count of pieces varies by source. DJ Mag reported 26 comics and six articles, Humanoids’ own store page advertises “10 articles and more,” and French radio station Radio FG counted 27 artists when the project was first teased in June. The page count of 272 is consistent everywhere.

The Random Access Memories team returns

The most telling credit is on that exclusive cover. Cédric Hervet served as Daft Punk’s longtime creative director, and together with Warren Fu he shaped the visual identity of Random Access Memories, the 2013 album that won Album of the Year at the Grammys. Their involvement is a strong signal that this is more than a fan tribute, and it lines up with the “authorized” label Humanoids is putting on the release.

Neither Thomas Bangalter nor Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo is credited as a contributor in any of the coverage so far. That fits their pattern since the split in February 2021: the music and the iconography keep circulating, while the two men stay out of frame. Bangalter, now focused on orchestral work such as his ballet score Mirage, has told DJ Mag that a reunion is unlikely because “there are other things to explore.”

Why Métal Hurlant and Daft Punk make sense together

Métal Hurlant launched in France in the mid 1970s and ran until 1987, introducing readers to Mœbius, Druillet and Alejandro Jodorowsky. Its English cousin, Heavy Metal, carried that aesthetic to American readers, and filmmakers still cite it: Humanoids quotes Denis Villeneuve on its site saying, “I am a child of Metal Hurlant.” Humanoids revived the title in the United States in 2025 as a quarterly, and this is its first special issue.

Daft Punk built their whole public identity on the same kind of French science fiction. The helmets, the pyramid live show, the anime film Interstella 5555 made with Leiji Matsumoto in 2003, and the art house film Electroma in 2006 all treated the duo as characters in a story. A comics anthology is a natural next chapter. If you want the human side of that story, our look at Daft Punk before the helmets covers the faces behind the robots.

Release dates, editions and the “Concert That Never Happened”

Humanoids’ store lists several formats for the English edition:

  • Standard softcover with the Anuj Shrestha cover, with preorders starting at $22.99
  • Exclusive softcover and exclusive hardcover with the Hervet and Fu cover, sold only through Humanoids
  • A four poster set at $49.99, available during the preorder window

Preorders are expected to ship in mid January 2027, with bookstores and comic shops following in February. In France, retailers list the hors série from Les Humanoïdes Associés for October 14, 2026 at €22.

The most unusual extra is a $249.99 portrait add on. Eighty buyers will have their faces drawn by Florian Breuil into a double page spread called “The Concert That Never Happened,” an imagined Daft Punk show printed in every copy. The add on does not include the book itself.

What it means for fans and the industry

Five years after the split, Daft Punk remain one of dance music’s most valuable catalogs and brands. An authorized comic built by their own visual collaborators shows the legacy being treated as a universe, not just a back catalog. For a scene that rarely gets this kind of print treatment, a 272 page anthology from a publisher with Métal Hurlant’s history sets a high bar for how electronic artists can live on beyond the stage. It also shows how deep the duo’s influence runs on records that shaped the genre, a thread we followed in 10 tracks that changed house music forever.

Fan accounts such as Daft Club quickly shared the preorder link on X, and for collectors the Hervet and Fu cover is the obvious edition to watch, since it will not be sold in bookstores.

What happens next

The French edition lands on October 14. English preorders remain open on the official Humanoids Daft Punk page until the campaign closes, after which the exclusive editions stay on the Humanoids store but will not reach bookstores. US copies ship from mid January 2027.
