Long before the sold out stadiums and the Grammy, Fred again.. had a teacher most producers could only dream of. The story of Fred again and Brian Eno starts with a teenager joining a singing group and ends, so far, with two generations of electronic music learning from each other.

How Fred again met Brian Eno at 16
Fred Gibson was 16 when a family friend invited him to an a cappella group that met at Brian Eno’s home. Eno, the man who gave ambient music its name with 1978’s Ambient 1: Music for Airports, noticed the kid’s talent quickly and took him under his wing.
Fred has said that a teenager is not really ready for a mind like Eno’s. “When I met him, the way in which his mind works, I don’t think a 16 year old is primed to fully appreciate,” he told MusicRadar, adding that he grows “increasingly grateful for his genius” as the years pass. He also described Eno’s “childish, wide eyed fascination with things,” and meant it as the highest compliment.
The studio years: Someday World and High Life
The mentorship turned into real work in 2014. Eno teamed up with Karl Hyde of Underworld for two albums released that year, Someday World and High Life. A young Fred was in the room: he is credited as co producer and songwriter on Someday World and as a songwriter on High Life.
For a producer barely into his twenties, it was an apprenticeship in how one of the most influential figures in modern music thinks about sound, process and happy accidents. Fred went on to write and produce for a long list of pop names before stepping out under his own alias with the Actual Life series.

Secret Life: Fred again and Brian Eno on the same record
In May 2023 the two finally released an album together. Secret Life came out on 5 May 2023 via Text Records, the label run by Four Tet, who called it “the most beautiful album of 2023” when he announced it. Previews were streamed nightly on a dedicated site before release.
The record is a quiet, intimate ambient set built around Fred’s voice and the sampled vocal fragments that define his Actual Life work, with interpolations of John Prine and Leonard Cohen. Critics were split, but it topped the US New Age Albums chart and showed a softer side of Fred to a festival audience used to hearing him at full volume.
From mentee to Grammy winner
A year later the student got his own trophy. At the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2024, Fred again.. won Best Dance/Electronic Album for Actual Life 3. The same night, “Rumble,” his collaboration with Skrillex and Four Tet, took Best Dance/Electronic Recording.
Since then he has kept building one of the most talked about live shows in electronic music, from surprise club sets to stadium nights. If you want to go deeper on his process, his documentary Behind The Sound is a good place to start, and we also looked at the rumors around Fred again and GTA 6.
The twist: Eno says Fred is his mentor too
The best part of the story is that the mentorship runs both ways. Eno, now in his late seventies, has said he sees the younger producer as a teacher. “I think of Fred as my mentor as well,” he said. “I learnt so much about contemporary music from watching him working.”
It is a rare thing to hear from an artist with Eno’s résumé, a man who shaped records for Talking Heads, U2 and David Bowie. But it fits his long held view that the most interesting ideas come from collaboration and from staying curious. In Fred, he found a student who became a peer.
So the next time a Fred again.. track loops a stranger’s voice memo into something that hits you in the chest, remember where some of that thinking came from: a singing group in Brian Eno’s house, and a 16 year old who was paying attention.
