On Saturday September 26, Idris Elba stood behind the CDJs at Cloud 11 Theatre in Bangkok, billed simply as IDRIS, playing house at a one night only show. For part of that audience it read as a novelty, the actor from The Wire and Luther having a go at the decks. For anyone who has followed the Idris Elba DJ story, it was closer to a normal night at a job he started forty years ago.

The Instagram version of this story usually stops at one line: he was a DJ before he was famous. The full version is longer, messier and a lot more useful if you want to understand why his sets sound the way they do.

The Idris Elba DJ story starts with a wedding business

In 1986 Elba was a teenager in east London helping his uncle run a wedding DJ business. Within about a year he and a group of friends had spun that off into their own company. The bookings were weddings, christenings and local functions, which is unglamorous work and also the best possible training, because a room full of people who did not come for you will tell you very quickly when you have lost them.

Records were already in the house. He told Rolling Stone that one of his earliest memories is being four years old holding the sleeve of Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On, and that his father let him play records at family gatherings by the time he was nine or ten.

Big Driis, London clubs and the New York years

Through his late teens and twenties he worked London club nights under the name Big Driis, including UK garage nights such as Twice as Nice, while auditioning for acting work that was not yet paying. In the late 1990s he moved to New York and kept taking DJ bookings alongside other jobs, playing sets that moved between reggae, house, hip hop and Latin records depending on the room.

Landing The Wire in 2002 changed the balance. He has been open about the fact that DJing slid into second place for a stretch, and about the moment he decided to stop treating it as a hobby: he hired a DJ manager and an agent and started running it as a second career rather than something he did when a set happened to land in his lap.

Coachella, Ibiza and the years the bookings got serious

The public turning point was April 2019, when he played Coachella and made no attempt to hide how much it mattered to him. Three years later he took a Friday residency in the Club Room at Hï Ibiza, a room built for exactly the kind of dancefloor focused selections he prefers, and he has since turned up at Pacha, Pikes and Glastonbury.

The releases run in parallel and are easy to miss. There was the Big Man EP in 2006, Kings Among Kings in 2009, High Class Problems Vol. 1 in 2010, the Mi Mandela project in 2014, the Murdah Loves John album tied to his Luther character in 2015, the Yardie mixtape in 2019 and Cordi Elba with Australian duo Lime Cordiale in 2022. He launched his own label, 7Wallace Music, in July 2018.

Sound International is where the house music lives now

The part of this that matters most to house music came in 2024, when Elba launched Sound International, a label and party platform named after the sound system his uncle ran in London in the 1980s. Its stated idea is blunt enough to print on a shirt: Neverending House. The roster reaches for global house rather than one city’s version of it, with signings out of West Africa among others.

The parties have followed the same logic. Sound International has landed in Nairobi, New York and now Bangkok, where the September 26 show at Cloud 11 Theatre paired him with local house artists Wildealer and Elaheh. Elba has also dropped the surname on these bills. On a Sound International flyer he is IDRIS, which tells you how he wants the booking read.

Why it still lands as a surprise

Elba is a much bigger public figure now than he was when he was carrying crates through London, and that scale is part of why the DJ work still gets filed as a hobby. He was knighted in the honours list announced at the end of 2025 for his work with young people, and collected it at Windsor Castle the following year. Next to that, a Saturday night in a Bangkok club looks like a side quest.

It is the other way around. The decks came first, they paid the bills when acting did not, and they are still the thing he builds companies around. Dance music has plenty of unlikely people behind the booth, from a Portuguese priest with a residency to the Afro house artists filling historic venues like Black Coffee at Fort Manoel. Elba is not one of them. He is a DJ who also acts, and his booking history has been saying so since 2010.
