Locker Manchester is the city’s next club room, and it opens on Friday, October 2. New Century, the restored 1960s hall near Victoria Station, is turning the floor beneath its main auditorium into a 450 capacity space built specifically for club nights, with an Adlib engineered L-Acoustics system, a sprung dancefloor and a first season that runs through to December 11.
New Century announced the room on Instagram on Wednesday, September 2, and the trade press picked it up over the following week. Tickets for the opening season are already on sale.
What Locker Manchester actually is
Locker sits on the ground floor of the Grade II listed New Century building on Hanover Street, directly below the hall that has hosted the venue’s live programme since it reopened. The two rooms are separated by a bespoke dividing wall, installed so that a band upstairs and a club night downstairs can run at the same time without bleeding into each other.
The room is deliberately not a scaled down copy of the hall. Where the upper floor leans on restored vintage detail, Locker keeps low ceilings and exposed structure, with lighting designed around DJ sets rather than seated shows. It has its own bar, its own entrance logic and, true to the name, actual lockers.
One small point of confusion in early coverage: some outlets described Locker as a basement. New Century’s own description places it directly beneath the historic hall on the ground floor, which is where the subterranean feel comes from. The venue and DJ Mag both use ground floor.
The sound system and the room
Audio specialists Adlib designed the L-Acoustics rig for the space. That is a meaningful spend for a 450 capacity room, and it signals what the programming is aiming at: artists who expect a proper system rather than a PA borrowed from a live stage. The dancefloor is sprung, which matters more than it sounds when a room is running until late several nights a week.
Opening weekend and the first season
The opening night on Friday, October 2 brings Nooriyah, Adele Tondu and Imad:re. Saturday, October 3 hands the room to Paranoid London, performing live with Mutado Pintado, alongside DJ Subaru, Kiosk and further guests.

Season one runs to December 11. That spread, acid house lineage on one night and club focused live acts on another, is close to what New Century’s managing director described when the room was announced.
Why it matters for Manchester right now
“Locker aims to reimagine our ground floor in a way that enables us to dive into our acid house roots, support even more grassroots talent as well as providing independent hospitality for which New Century is known and loved,” New Century managing director Abby Mudge said in a press statement. She added that the room will also create opportunities for students at dBs Institute, the music education provider based in the same building.
The timing is the story. Manchester has had a rough year for venues. The White Hotel confirmed in May that it plans to close in January 2027. Stage & Radio has been in an ongoing dispute with a neighbouring development. Against that, Onsite Records opened in the Northern Quarter in July and Sankeys secured a 6 AM licence for its new location in March. Locker lands on the positive side of that ledger, and at a size that independent promoters can realistically book.
Small and mid sized rooms are where most careers start, and they have been the first casualties across the UK as costs rose. A 450 capacity space with a serious system, opened by an operator with an existing hospitality business to cushion it, is a more durable model than a standalone club taking the same risk alone. It is the same logic behind institutions taking their programming into unlikely buildings, as fabric did with its St Paul’s Cathedral deal.
