Ibiza authorities have declared an “extreme” weather alert as the island is battered by torrential rain and severe flooding from Storm Gabrielle. A Civil Protection Alert sent to mobile devices on September 30 warned residents and visitors to avoid travel, stay indoors, and keep away from low-lying areas and basements.
Record Rainfall in Hours
According to Spain’s meteorological agency AEMET, more than 180mm of rain has fallen on the island in just 12 hours, with further rainfall expected until around 4 PM CEST. The downpour has caused widespread disruption and damage across the island.
Damage Across Key Locations
Social media footage shows extensive flooding in Ibiza Town, Playa d’en Bossa, and Ibiza Port, areas known for their bustling nightlife and clubbing hotspots. At the Pacha hotel in Talamanca, a video circulating online appears to show a collapsed ceiling in the lobby, just steps away from the world-famous superclub.
Transport Disruptions
The E-10 road, which connects Ibiza Airport to the rest of the island, has been closed since last night due to severe flooding. AENA, Spain’s air traffic management body, confirmed that several flights were diverted in the early hours of the morning, though passengers are reportedly now able to navigate the airport normally.
Emergency Response Efforts
Firefighters have been deployed across the island to rescue people trapped in vehicles, lifts, and homes. According to Sergeant José Antonio López of the Ibiza Council Fire Service, crews have already rescued 15 people and attended to more than 50 emergency incidents.
Ongoing Threat
With further heavy rain expected through the afternoon, authorities continue to urge caution. Residents and tourists alike have been told to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
