The legendary New York City nightclub Studio 54 will reopen for one night only tomorrow, marking its first revival in 45 years. The event comes as part of the lead-up to New York Fashion Week.
Valentino Beauty Hosts Luxury Launch
Valentino Beauty is reopening the venue on September 10 for the launch of its 2025 Rendez-Vous Ivory Collection. The new line, inspired by Studio 54’s iconic disco imagery, will be accompanied by photography from Dutch artist Carlijn Jacobs, CR Fashion Book reports.
Original Patrons Invited
The event promises an “immersive evening” with a handful of Studio 54’s original patrons invited. First opened in 1977 by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, Studio 54 became a cultural landmark of New York nightlife. Its exclusive guest lists famously included stars like David Bowie, Grace Jones, Diana Ross, Elton John, Cher, and Eartha Kitt.
DJs and Fashion Icons of the Era
Beyond its celebrity clientele, Studio 54 also shaped dance music history by hosting key DJs such as Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan, and Nicky Siano. It also had deep ties to the fashion world, drawing designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Karl Lagerfeld, Calvin Klein, and Valentino himself.
A Controversial Legacy
In 2019, co-founder Ian Schrager criticized designer Michael Kors for “exploiting” the Studio 54 brand with a fashion collection inspired by the club. Despite its reputation, the club’s original run was short-lived: it closed in 1980, briefly reopened in 1981 under new ownership, but failed to recapture its peak.
Ongoing Cultural Influence
Studio 54’s influence on music and fashion continues decades later. In 2022, Nile Rodgers and Roosevelt paid tribute to the nightclub with their collaborative single Passion. The club, housed in a former CBS studio, remains one of the most famous symbols of New York’s disco era.
