Twenty years after the last Love Parade rolled down the streets of Berlin, the movement it started is getting the documentary treatment. Rave The Planet 2026 season officially begins this week with the premiere of Love Is Stronger: From Love Parade to Rave The Planet, a new film landing on Germany’s ARD streaming platform on Friday, July 31. The documentary arrives just over two weeks before the fifth Rave The Planet Parade takes over the Straße des 17. Juni on August 15 under the motto IMAGINE LOVE.
The timing is no accident. 2026 marks exactly two decades since Berlin hosted its final Love Parade, and the film uses that anniversary to connect the city’s rave history with the movement now carrying it forward.
A Documentary Two Decades in the Making
Produced by ARD Kultur, WDR, rbb and SWR, Love Is Stronger opens a dedicated programming series on club culture across Germany’s public broadcasting network. That alone says something about how far techno has traveled: from an underground movement policed at the margins to a subject national broadcasters now treat as cultural heritage.
The film was directed by Britta Mischer, one of the defining documentary filmmakers of Berlin’s club scene, known for the feature documentary about the legendary Bar25. Mischer has been filming Rave The Planet since its earliest days, and the documentary follows organizers Ellen Dosch-Roeingh and Dr. Motte over several years as they fight to bring a citywide parade back to life through the nonprofit rave the planet gGmbH.
Built on previously unreleased archival footage and personal perspectives, the film charts the Love Parade from its Berlin beginnings through its rise to global prominence and eventual end. After the streaming premiere on July 31, it will also air on rbb television on August 12 at 10:15 PM CET.
From a Birthday Demo to a Million Ravers
The Love Parade began in the summer of 1989, when Dr. Motte and a small group of friends registered a demonstration for peace and understanding through music and marched through West Berlin with about 150 people. Within a decade it had become the largest electronic music gathering on the planet, drawing more than a million ravers to the Tiergarten at its late nineties peak.
The original parade left Berlin after 2006 and came to a definitive end following the crowd disaster at the 2010 edition in Duisburg, where 21 people lost their lives. For years it seemed the format was gone for good. Then, in 2019, Dr. Motte founded rave the planet gGmbH, a nonprofit dedicated to reviving the parade and securing official recognition for the culture around it. The organization scored a landmark win in 2024, when Techno Culture in Berlin was added to Germany’s nationwide Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, maintained by the German Commission for UNESCO. Rave The Planet 2026 Returns to Berlin on August 15
The fifth Rave The Planet Parade returns to the Straße des 17. Juni on Saturday, August 15, standing for peace, diversity, humanity and recognition of electronic music culture’s contribution to the international cultural landscape. For the first time, the parade will produce its own world feed: one continuous, centrally produced live broadcast covering the full event from 2:00 to 10:00 PM CET across its own channels. German broadcaster rbb will also carry the parade live on television and on the ARD streaming platform, giving the anniversary edition its widest reach yet.
The Anthem, the Remixes and the Afterparty
This year’s parade anthem, IMAGINE LOVE by Dr. Motte and Tommahawk, arrived on July 10 alongside an official music video shot entirely from a first person point of view through the streets of Berlin. A remix campaign follows: versions by Juliet Fox and by Mark Reeder with Micha Adam land on August 7, and Berlin duo Pan-Pot delivers its take on August 28.
When the parade wraps, the celebration moves indoors. Rave The Planet and LOFT Concerts have teamed up for the first official Rave The Planet Afterparty, starting at 11:00 PM on August 15 at Columbiahalle. The lineup stacks techno heavyweights DJ Rush, Dr. Motte, Nakadia, Teenage Mutants and Tommahawk, with support from Kay Barton, on a sound system tailored specifically to the venue.
