Burning Man has announced the theme for its 2027 edition: “Spellbound”, an invitation to explore creativity, imagination and the nature of enchantment. The theme will shape next year’s gathering in Black Rock City, while also inspiring activities and initiatives across the global Burning Man community throughout the year.

According to Stuart Mangrum, Director of Burning Man Project’s Philosophical Center and author of the theme, creativity can be seen as a way of imagining new realities and inviting others to take part in them. “Spellbound” therefore becomes a starting point for artistic projects, gatherings and spontaneous acts of participation, both in the Nevada desert and beyond.

The Burning Man community has grown considerably since the first gathering in 1986, originally held on a San Francisco beach before moving to Nevada’s Black Rock Desert in 1990. Today, the movement extends beyond the annual gathering, with more than 100 Regional Events as well as art projects, makerspaces, civic initiatives and community gatherings taking place around the world.

Burning Man Project is also encouraging participation throughout the year, with opportunities ranging from Fly Ranch campouts and Regional Events to art projects, volunteer activities and Honoraria Art Grants. The 2027 theme is intended as an open invitation to contribute, create and connect wherever participants may be.
