Boris Brejcha is taking off the mask for good. In a video posted to his social channels on Saturday, October 24, the German producer confirmed that 2028 will be his last year as Boris Brejcha and as The Joker, the masked character he has carried to the biggest stages in electronic music. The Boris Brejcha retirement comes with a clear timeline: one more festival summer in 2027, then a final headline run in 2028 before the chapter closes at the end of that year.

Boris Brejcha Retirement: What He Announced

The message was short and personal. Brejcha said the decision followed a long period of reflection and that it is entirely his own. He pointed to advice from his father as the deciding factor: “My dad always used to say that you should stop when things are at their best.” He then set the date himself, telling fans that in 2028 he will be “writing my final chapter.”

He also moved quickly to shut down speculation about his health or motivation. “I’m not sick, nor have I lost my joy in making music,” he said, a line repeated across the coverage by DJ Mag Germany, Time To House and Midnight Rebels.

According to the press release reported by DJ Mag Germany, the closing tour carries the title Last Chapter: Becoming the Joker. In the video he writes that name into an ornate book, the same prop he holds in the new press photo. No dates, cities or venues have been announced. Fans can register for updates at becomingthejoker.com, which currently shows only a newsletter signup and the promise that the book will open soon.

2027 Is the Final Festival Summer

DJ Mag Germany, EDMTunes and the Italian outlet youBEAT all report the same split: 2027 is his last year on festival lineups, and 2028 is reserved for his own headline shows. For American fans, that makes his first booking of 2027 especially significant. Ultra Miami, which runs March 26 to 28 at Bayfront Park, has already billed the US debut of Boris Brejcha back to back with Eric Prydz under his Cirez D alias, a pairing we covered when the Ultra Miami 2027 lineup dropped.

One detail differs between outlets. The German press release frames 2028 as a farewell headline tour, while Time To House reports that Brejcha described the year as a thank you to fans with as many shows as possible rather than a farewell tour in the usual sense. Both versions agree on the essentials: more shows, a celebration at the end of 2028, and no plans yet announced for what follows.

On that last point, he left the door slightly open. DJ Mag Germany quotes him saying that once his career ends, it will be time for him to write a new story. He has not said whether that story involves music, the mask or neither.

Twenty Years Behind the Mask

Brejcha played his first show at Universo Paralello in Brazil in 2006, and the Brazilian carnival inspired the Joker mask that became his trademark. He named his own sound High Tech Minimal: a precise, melodic and slightly playful take on techno that sits between the club and the main stage.

In 2015 he founded the label Fckng Serious with Ann Clue and Deniz Bul, giving that sound a home and a roster. His 2019 Cercle set at the Grand Palais in Paris has passed 60 million YouTube views, which helped turn a masked German producer into one of the most recognizable figures in the genre.

Leaving at the Top

The timing is what makes the announcement land. Brejcha is not fading out. In 2026 alone he played the Tomorrowland Mainstage, headlined Alexandra Palace in London and played his first ever back to back with Eric Prydz. Earlier in the year he also appeared on the RESISTANCE Miami Music Week 2026 lineup alongside Carl Cox and Eric Prydz.

Retirements with a two year runway are rare in dance music. Most artists step back quietly or take an open ended hiatus. By putting a date on it, Brejcha turns every remaining booking into an event, and promoters will know that a 2027 festival slot or a 2028 headline night is a last chance by definition.

How Fans Reacted

The response under the announcement post was immediate. Midnight Rebels reports that John Summit, Oliver Heldens and Amelie Lens were among the artists who commented. Brejcha addressed his audience directly in the video: “You have given me so much strength, and that’s why I want to give just as much strength back to you.”
