EXIT Festival 2027: Serbia’s Rebel Festival Returns to the Petrovaradin Fortress After the Student List Victory

EXIT Festival 2027 is confirmed: a special July edition at Novi Sad's Petrovaradin Fortress, a year ahead of the full comeback planned for 2028.

EXIT Festival 2027 returns to the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad

Two years to the day after the Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse that set off Serbia’s student protest movement, the festival that stood with those students has a date to come home. EXIT Festival 2027 will return to the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad in July 2027, organizers confirmed on October 29, with a special edition planned a full year ahead of the large scale comeback they had pencilled in for 2028.

The announcement landed four days after the Student List won Serbia’s snap parliamentary election on October 25. EXIT had said for more than a year that it would only go back when, in its words, “freedom returned to our country.” It now says that moment has arrived.

EXIT Festival 2027: what was announced

The confirmed facts are short. EXIT will stage a special event at the fortress in July 2027, and the full scale festival is still scheduled to return in 2028. Everything else is pending: the concept, the lineup, the exact dates and ticket sales will be revealed later through the official EXIT website.

The festival explained why the 2027 date exists at all. A comeback on EXIT’s usual scale needs at least 18 months of preparation, which is why 2028 was the original target. According to the organizers, a wave of emails, messages and comments from fans after the election changed the plan. “You simply can’t wait that long, and neither can we!” the festival wrote, promising a July gathering built around “FREEDOM, UNITY, and LOVE.”

Why EXIT left the fortress

The departure was political from the start. After the station canopy collapse on November 1, 2024 killed 16 people, students across Serbia began a protest movement against corruption and the government of Aleksandar Vučić. EXIT was the only major Serbian festival to publicly back them.

The organizers say the consequences were severe. Access All Areas reports that state funding was cut entirely, costing the festival about €1.5 million in support, and EXIT says it faced political, security and financial pressure that made a 2026 fortress edition impossible. The festival also links the May 2026 detention of founder Dušan Kovačević’s brother, on the eve of one of the largest student protests, to that pressure. That claim comes from EXIT itself, and the reports covering the announcement do not include a response from the outgoing government.

Kovačević framed the return as a direct result of the vote. “Now, thanks to the courage and perseverance of Serbia’s students, freedom has returned to our country,” he said in the announcement, adding that after taking EXIT’s spirit around the world, “we are finally coming home!” He also said the team “simply had to stand with” the students and uphold the values the festival was built on.

Those values go back to EXIT’s origin. The festival began in 2000 as a student movement campaigning against Slobodan Milošević, moved into the fortress in 2001 and grew into one of Europe’s biggest summer events, with around 200,000 visitors over four days at its peak, according to EDM Nomad.

A year on the road

EXIT did not go quiet while it was away. In 2026 it staged eight events across six countries, including Montenegro, Croatia, Malta and Spain, and won Promoter of the Year at the European Festival Awards in January, per Access All Areas.

The tour closed at the Great Pyramids. We covered the sold out Starlight Festival Giza on October 9 and 10, where Charlotte de Witte closed the main stage. At the time, no official attendance figure had been published; EXIT now puts the crowd at more than 40,000 visitors from 114 countries. That number comes from the organizers and has not been independently verified.

The fortress was never fully abandoned, either. Access All Areas and EDM Nomad report that on the dates the festival would normally have run, EXIT and Novi Sad students gathered at Petrovaradin under banners reading “STUDENTS ARE WINNING” and “NEXT YEAR AT THE FORTRESS.” EXIT’s own statement refers to the same banners. A few months later, that second banner reads like a forecast.

What the return means for the industry

For the European festival circuit, the immediate impact is on the calendar. EXIT traditionally runs in early to mid July, and booking agents will now plan around a special edition whose size has not been disclosed. A one off event built in under nine months is likely to be smaller than a classic four day EXIT, which is why the organizers are careful to call 2028 the real comeback.

There is also an economic story. Access All Areas reports that EXIT generated more than €300 million in tourism revenue for Serbia before it was pushed out, and Novi Sad has gone a summer without its biggest international draw. The international brand built in 2026, including a second Starlight edition already set for November 2027 in Giza, gives EXIT two homes rather than one.

What happens next

Three things to watch: the exact July 2027 dates, the first lineup names, and how tickets are sold for an edition the festival describes as special rather than standard. Serbia’s new government is also still taking shape after the vote, and EXIT’s plans for 2028 will depend on working with the incoming authorities in a way that was not possible over the past two years.

FAQ

When is EXIT Festival 2027?

EXIT has confirmed a special edition at the Petrovaradin Fortress in July 2027. Exact dates have not been announced.

Is EXIT Festival back in Serbia?

Yes. After a year abroad, EXIT will return to Novi Sad in July 2027, with a full scale festival planned for 2028.

Why did EXIT leave Serbia?

EXIT says it faced political, security and financial pressure after publicly supporting the student protests that followed the November 2024 canopy collapse in Novi Sad, including the loss of state funding.

Has the EXIT 2027 lineup been announced?

No. The concept, lineup, dates and ticket details will be shared later on the official EXIT website.
