Hypersonic Festival cancelled its entire 2026 run on Wednesday, pulling the plug on its Melbourne and Sydney shows roughly three weeks before Armin van Buuren was due to headline both cities for the second year in a row. Organisers blamed a scheduling change that pushed the Melbourne date onto a Friday, and say ticket holders will be refunded automatically or can roll their tickets into Dreamstate 2027.

The two events were set for Friday 20 November at Melbourne Showgrounds and Saturday 21 November at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, according to the festival’s own lineup artwork and reports from Noise11 and EDMTunes. One early report placed the festival in October, but the official poster confirms the November dates.

Why Hypersonic Festival Was Cancelled

In a statement posted on the official Hypersonic website and social channels, the organisers said: “We are devastated to confirm that hypersonic Sydney and Melbourne will not be going ahead in 2026.”

Their explanation was brief. Scheduling conflicts forced Melbourne onto a Friday this year, a slot that, in their words, “hasn’t worked out as hoped for an all day festival.” The knock on effect across both cities meant, they said, that “we can no longer deliver the festivals to the standard our artists and audience deserve.”

The statement did not address ticket sales, attendance projections or finances, and Rolling Stone Australia reported that it had asked the festival’s representatives whether Hypersonic will return in 2027. No answer had been published at the time of writing, so the brand’s future remains unconfirmed.

What Ticket Holders Get

The refund process is automatic, which spares fans the usual chase. According to the festival’s notice:

  • Full refund: processed automatically within 21 days, with no action required.
  • Dreamstate 2027 transfer: eligible ticket holders can move to Dreamstate 2027 free of charge by submitting a form within seven days.
  • Double Pass holders: can use a separate form, also within seven days, to keep their Dreamstate ticket and receive a 50 per cent refund on the Hypersonic portion. Anyone who does not respond gets the full refund by default.

The Dreamstate option makes sense given who runs both brands. Hypersonic is produced by Symbiotic, the Australian trance specialist behind Transmission and the Dreamstate events, working with Hardware Group.

A Big Room Lineup Left Without a Stage

Hypersonic had built its second edition around the same headliner as its first. Armin van Buuren topped a bill that also featured W&W, Showtek, Timmy Trumpet, Cyril, Hybrid Minds, Bassjackers, Act of Rage, Sunset Bros and a Pendulum DJ set, with names such as Joris Voorn, Yotto, Chris Avantgarde and Charlotte Haining spread across its stages. The mix of trance, big room, techno, hardstyle and drum and bass was the point: the festival sold itself as a multi genre outdoor event pitched at the start of the Australian summer.

Background: From Stereosonic Roots to a Short Run

Hypersonic launched in 2025 with shows at Sydney Showground on 29 November and Melbourne Showgrounds on 30 November. Van Buuren headlined that debut too, alongside Alesso, Steve Aoki, Adam Beyer, MaRLo, Aaron Hibell and KREAM.

The company behind it carries serious history. Symbiotic is led by CEO Richie McNeill, who founded Hardware and co founded Stereosonic, the touring festival that grew to five Australian cities before going on hiatus in 2016. Director Janette Bishara has produced Armin Only, A State Of Trance and Above & Beyond shows in the country. When Hypersonic was announced, plenty of fans read it as an attempt to recapture the scale of the Stereosonic era.

Why It Matters for Australian Festivals

Losing a two city event this close to the date stings for artists who had blocked out late November in Australia, and for local promoters who count on these international bookings to anchor the summer. It also adds to a run of tough news for the country’s festival circuit, which has spent recent seasons exposed to weather risk, a pressure we looked at in our piece on how climate change threatens Australia’s music festivals.

Hypersonic is not alone in stepping back this year. In the US, Bonnaroo is taking 2027 off after back to back storms. The difference here is the reason given: a calendar problem rather than weather or demand, though organisers shared no figures to show how sales were tracking.

What Happens Next

Refunds should land within three weeks, and the seven day window for Dreamstate transfers is already running. Whether any of the booked artists pick up replacement shows in Melbourne or Sydney on those dates has not been announced. The bigger open question is 2027: until Symbiotic says otherwise, Hypersonic’s third edition is unconfirmed.

FAQ

Is Hypersonic Festival 2026 cancelled?

Yes. Both the Melbourne (20 November) and Sydney (21 November) events were cancelled on 28 October 2026.

Why was Hypersonic cancelled?

Organisers said scheduling conflicts moved Melbourne to a Friday, which did not suit an all day festival, and the flow on effect meant they could not deliver either event to their expected standard.

How do I get a refund for Hypersonic tickets?

Refunds are automatic and should be processed within 21 days. Eligible fans can instead transfer to Dreamstate 2027 by completing a form within seven days.

Who was headlining Hypersonic 2026?

Armin van Buuren, backed by W&W, Showtek, Timmy Trumpet, Cyril, Hybrid Minds and a Pendulum DJ set, among others.

Will Hypersonic return in 2027?

That has not been confirmed. The organisers’ statement did not mention future editions.

For now, Hypersonic joins the list of festivals that did not make it to their second summer intact. The refunds are clear and the Dreamstate fallback softens the blow, but the brand’s future depends on what Symbiotic does with its calendar next year.
