Avant Gardner, the parent company of the Brooklyn Mirage complex, is reportedly preparing to rebrand following a turbulent year marked by bankruptcy, a partial demolition, and regulatory setbacks. According to an internal email seen by BK Mag, the company has asked staff to help choose a new name for the entire venue complex.
Email to Staff Suggests Full Name Change
The email, reportedly sent in October, invited employees to submit name ideas and noted that the new title would replace the current Avant Gardner name. However, the message also stated that the company’s existing logo would remain unchanged. The rebranding effort comes after Avant Gardner was acquired by Axar Capital Management, its longtime lender.
A Difficult Year for the Williamsburg Venue
Brooklyn Mirage, one of New York’s most prominent electronic music venues and part of the Avant Gardner complex, has faced multiple issues in recent years. In 2023, two deaths and an alleged kidnapping linked to individuals who had attended the venue prompted increased scrutiny. While the venue denied responsibility, management announced plans for $30 million in safety-focused renovations and set a reopening for May 2024.
The venue did not reopen as scheduled after failing to meet inspection deadlines, resulting in the withdrawal of its temporary occupancy certificate. BK Mag later reported that former non-executive chairman Gary Richards was overheard saying the company was “bleeding money” and struggling to find a buyer.
Bankruptcy, Debt, and Partial Demolition
In August, Avant Gardner filed for bankruptcy with over $150 million in funded debt obligations. The Real Deal reported that building owners sought permission to demolish part of the 80,000-square-foot complex, specifically a 32,000-square-foot section.
In October, Axar Capital Management purchased Avant Gardner for approximately $110 million, according to BK Mag. Staff members who shared the internal email with the outlet said employees have received few updates about the bankruptcy process.
Early Rebrand Name Suggestions
Reported name suggestions shared internally include Anu Start, NYDF (New York Dance Factory), Social Experiment, New Dimension, and retaining the name The Brooklyn Mirage. No final decision has been announced.
