Ron Carroll, the celebrated DJ, songwriter, and vocalist, has died at the age of 57. The news was confirmed on September 22nd by fellow Chicago DJ Deonte Pennington, who shared a heartfelt post on Facebook. No cause of death has been disclosed.
Roots in Chicago’s Music and Church Scene
Born in Chicago in 1968, Carroll first developed his voice singing in church choirs before immersing himself in the city’s emerging house music scene. His debut record, My Prayer, was released in 1993. The following year, after meeting Louie Vega at the Winter Music Conference, he wrote lyrics for Barbara Tucker’s classic I Get Lifted.
A Defining Voice in House Music
Over the next three decades, Carroll became one of the most recognizable voices in house. His preacher-like vocal delivery earned him the nickname “The Minister of Sound.” Tracks such as Superfunk’s Lucky Star, Hardsoul’s Back Together, and Bob Sinclar and Axwell’s What A Wonderful World brought him international acclaim.

Beyond his vocal performances, Carroll was also a prolific DJ and label owner.
