Berlin’s legendary Watergate club, which closed its doors in early 2025 after 27 years of shaping the electronic music scene, has launched a new archival mix series titled “Watergate Archive.” The inaugural release features the club’s final set, performed by co-founder and resident DJ Uli Wombacher, also known as Metro, during the closing party on January 2, 2025.

A Set That Captured 27 Years of History

This emotionally charged set is a heartfelt blend of personal favorites, club anthems, and timeless classics, including tracks like Lil Louis’ “French Kiss,” Heaven & Earth’s “Prescription Every Night,” and Bryan Ferry’s “Don’t Stop the Dance.” Metro described the experience as “a set shaped by the moment, the crowd, the feeling,” delivered in a DJ booth overflowing with hugs, tears, and tropical humidity after 48 hours of non-stop music.

Watergate’s closure was attributed to financial challenges, including inflation, rising energy costs, and high rent, which made continued operation untenable. However, the spirit of the club lives on through this archival project.

Closing Time

Reflecting on the experience, Metro shared, “What do you play for the last dance? What’s the final track? When do you turn off the music? Ultimately, it was precisely what DJing has always meant to me: a set shaped by the moment, the crowd, the feeling.”

Listeners can experience Metro’s final set on SoundCloud or YouTube.
